HOW TO SCORE

Next time we'll learn about the Categories  for scoring FIMS, but today let's take a look at ...

                                                       The Score Pad
A score of 1 means the patients needs total assistance performing the activity. The patient expends less than 25% of the effort. If the patient needs two helpers they get a score of 1.
A score of 2, or max assistance still means the patient is dependent, but expends between 25 to 50% of the effort.
A score of 3, or moderate assistance means the patient requires more help than touching, but expends between 50 and 75% of the effort.
A score of 4 is termed minimal contact assistance in which the patient expends more than 75% of the effort, but still requires touching.
A score of 5, Supervision or Setup, the patient is NOT touched, but the helper must cue or coach the patient into performing the task. Hence, setup, means set things up.
A patient described as modified independence with a score of 6 means the patient requires an assisstive device, the activity takes longer than normal or there is a safety risk involved.
Independence, a score of 7, is just as you would expect. No aids, no modifications.
A patient can also receive a O, which means that the activity did not occur. We'll learn more about that next time.
